Wellbeing Week 2022 in Harcourt Terrace E.T.N.S.

This week was Wellbeing Week in Harcourt Terrace E.T.N.S as part of  our Amber Flag application. We had a fantastic week with all members of our school community enjoying some wonderful, mindful activities. This was very much a child centred week, as the children created wellbeing choice boards, where they democratically selected the wellbeing activity they wished to do. Our wonderful staff went on a 5km walk and stopped off at our schools permanent location, which left everyone excited about our bright future. The children all took part in our couch to 5km challenge, travelling 1km a day. We had a virtual fundraiser in aid of Pieta house. Thank you to everyone who donated as it is very much appreciated. We are well on our way to become ambassadors for wellbeing, by obtaining an Amber Flag for our school. Check out how we got on in this short video:

Well-being week so far!

Well-being week is off to a great start in second class!

We started the week by making our well-being choice boards. We have been using these throughout the day and letting one person choose a well being activity for the whole class from their choice board. So far we have had some extra movement breaks, arts and crafts and some Pokémon drawing!

We have also been enjoying our 5km running challenge. We have run a kilometer a day so far. We figured out that if we ran 5km it would be like nearly running all the way to Sandymount beach!
11 laps of our playground is 1km!

by Friday we will have run 5km!

We have lots more fun activities planned for our well-being week and are enjoying it a lot so far!

Active Learning in 1st Class

We have been up and at ’em lately in 1st Class!
We have been learning about length and measuring the school with metre long strings. We also had fun with the fabulous PE equipment paid for by the PGTA’s ‘Walk to Paddy’ fundraiser last year – the scooter boards are the standout hit.
Finally we have been enjoying the construction toys and have built Hogwarts, the Grand Canyon and a Ghostbusters trap house recently. There is no stopping us!

Jackson Pollock Inspired Art

Second Class have been learning about the abstract artist Jackson Pollock.

We learned all about his famous drip painting technique and got to try it out for our selves. It was messy but a lot of fun!

Like real artists we came up with names for our pieces and labeled them!

Next we moved on to using the Jackson Pollock inspired methods to create a “Crazy Hair” piece. We drew and designed the body and to create the hair we used straws to blow water colours in all different directions.
We are very proud of our finished pieces!

Animal Crackers!

First, Second and Tony’s class were treated to a workshop with the author and illustrator of the book Animal Crackers today, Sarah Webb and Alan Nolan. We had so much fun sharing and learning amazing facts about animals and really enjoyed the penguin draw-a-long. Thank you so much for including us in your Citywide Read, Rathmines Library – best neighbours ever!

Ryan’s New Jumper

Second Class had fun thinking about and designing a jumper for Ryan Turbidy for tonight’s Late Late Toy Show.
We also learned about the history of the Toy Show and how it has been airing for 47 years!

Each year has a theme and we made a few predictions about what tonight’s might be!

Our favourite parts to learn about were the performances, the special guests and of course the toys!

1 Minute Maths!

Second class had a lot of fun learning about time last week. We became very secure in the concept of how long a minute is.

We estimated how long it would take us to do certain things in 1 minute. Some of the things we estimated were how many jumps we could do, how many times we could run the length of the yard or how many long steps we could take in one minute.

It was a lot of fun and we got fresh air and exercise while practising our counting skills, our estimation skills and developing our understanding of time.

Science week 2021 in Harcourt Terrace E.T.N.S.

This week in Harcourt Terrace all the classes celebrated Science week. The children all became scientists in their classrooms. Let’s see how they all got on!

Science Week in Second Class:

Second class learned all about Energy this week. They learned about different types of energy such as solar energy, wind energy and electricity. We begin to understand how everything around us is made of atoms – both positive and negatively charged. Sometimes with a bit of friction these atoms can become charged! This is called Static Electricity.

We completed an experiment on the power of Static Electricity. We investigated weather a balloon charged with static electricity could attract different materials. Our two items for our experiment were salt and rice krispies.

First, we made a prediction on what we thought would happen. We completed the experiment and recorded our results with diagrams just like real Scientists do!

First class:

First Class really enjoyed Science week. We did lots of experiments.

We used food colouring to show how plants absorb water up their stem. We checked our heart rate after resting and after moving to see how much it changes. We made paper helicopters and got them to fly and spin!

Finally, we worked in teams to build ramps that our toy cars can speed down. We figured out ways to make our cars go fast and slow on the ramp, and even tried to build a really long ramp in our classroom! Here are a few pictures of our ramps.

Junior and Senior Infants:

Junior and Senior Infants were busy building rockets, making snowman coats and having a Science show and tell.

Tony & Ronnie’s class:

Tony and Ronnie’s classes made Volcano’s erupt, experimented with magnets and Checked what floats and what sinks. They also made a bottle of coke explode with some Mentos!
