In our class, we learned about and celebrated different cultural festivals from around the world. These included Diwali, Hanukkah, Chinese New Year and Ramadan. Throughout our learning we were so lucky to have some parent guests come into our classroom and teach us about their traditions. We read stories, learned new traditions and saw some beautiful pictures of dress wear and food linked to the festivals. Here are some pictures and information about what we learned:
- Diwali – Also known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is a Hindu festival that symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. People celebrate by lighting lamps, bursting fireworks, and sharing sweets with family and friends. Check out these rangoli art pieces we created from coloured rice.
- Hanukkah – This Jewish festival, also called the Festival of Lights, lasts for eight days and commemorates a miracle in which a small amount of oil burned for eight days in a temple. Families celebrate by lighting the menorah, playing with dreidels, and eating special foods like latkes. Thanks to Anaelle for sharing your families culture with our class.
- Chinese New Year – This marks the beginning of the lunar new year in Chinese culture. It is celebrated with dragon dances, fireworks, giving red envelopes with money for good luck, and special meals with family. Each year is associated with a different animal from the Chinese zodiac. Thank to Xin Lynch for sharing your beautiful culture with our class.
- Ramadan – A holy month observed by Muslims around the world, Ramadan is a time of fasting, prayer, and reflection. People fast from sunrise to sunset and break their fast in the evening with a meal called iftar. The month ends with Eid al-Fitr, a joyful celebration with feasts and gifts. Thanks to Yasir and Ramsha for sharing your beautiful culture with our class.
By celebrating these festivals together, we learn about different traditions, respect each other’s cultures, and enjoy the spirit of unity and togetherness. 🙂
