Junior Entrepreneur Programme in 6th Class A

Written by: Ronia, Hari and Finn.

The children of 6th class A have been taking part in the Junior Entrepreneur Programme since January. The Junior Entrepreneur Programme (JEP) is Ireland’s leading entrepreneurship skills programme. So, we started and began brainstorming ideas. We split up into three groups and created three different ideas. The ideas we came up with were a cap company called Kapz, a board game called Chaos Dimensions developed by The Yella Fellas and Big Boards, and a squishy company called Squish Melon.

After we finished making the prototypes, we met the Dragons (Tony, Aoife and Molly) so they could choose a product for our class to focus on. They asked us lots of questions about our products. Then they consulted with each other and selected one product. We then got the message that they chose Kapz. The whole class got behind the idea and we began to brainstorm what we needed to do to bring the idea to market.

KAPZ

Kapz is a cap company that creates caps that suit everyone’s style. Our product helps because we are entering the summer term and the UV rays are VERY dangerous – so we have designed hats that students and teachers can enjoy wearing to keep them safe from the UV rays on the yard. The reason our hats are so special is because they include all types of styles so everyone can feel special and seen.

The Production Process

The first thing we needed to do was come up with a survey. We visited every class in the school, showed them the prototypes we had made and asked them questions about what types of hats they would like to wear. From this, we discovered that people liked bucket hats as much as caps and that they preferred hats that were customised with patches and beads rather than with material. After we found out people’s preferences, we ordered all the resources we needed to make the caps. Once we received the package, we got straight to work designing the caps and bucket hats. We split into two teams: marketing and design/production.

The marketing team created posters, planned an idea for a promotional video and documented the process to share here on the school website. Finn and Liam planned the content of the video, Yasin filmed it and Senan edited it. Smera and Lilian created posters to be displayed around the school and Hari wrote this blog post.

Ronia, Carla, Emma, Jasmine and Lavinia were on the design team. They decided which style of patches / beads would match each hat. The patches cater for all sorts of interests: teddy bears, sports, food, animals, nature and space! Ronia led the production team; she got to work sewing the patches on to the hats and was assisted by Lavinia and Emma.

By then we were very tired, but we powered through and wrote this blog post and finished the production process and now we are ready to sell our products!

SPRING FAIR!!!

We will be selling our caps at the Spring Fair on Thursday, 23rd April. They will cost €5 each. Don’t miss out on getting yourself a unique cap for the summer!

Term 1 in 6th Class A

Here are some highlights from Term 1 in 6th Class A!

RTE Filming

At the beginning of the year RTÉ came to our school to film about our relatively new building! A lot of us got interviewed and then we got to watch ourselves on the board during lunch! The guy who interviewed us was called Cathal and he was nice to us all.

The Canal Clean Up

One of our highlights of the year so far is the canal clean up with the Hilton Hotel staff.  They invited us to help them clean up the canal and the area around our school, some of us were even raking dead leaves off the ground. After that we found out that all of our hard work paid off as we got invited to come into the Hotel to get some hot chocolate and cookies (they were delicious).

Our Novel

The novel we have been reading is Journey to the River Sea, a story about a girl who goes to live with her family in Brazil. The story is set in the early 1900. Some of us liked the book and some of us didn’t enjoy it as much.

Learn Together: Fast Fashion

We spent a long time learning about fast fashion in 6th class this term. We learned about how our hunger for fashion can harm other people and about their poor work environments. We did a lot of work on our school iPads about this and some of us even made videos!

Maths Week in 6th Class

Maths week is something we celebrate throughout all the school however this year we did something else to celebrate Maths week, this year we made DIY maths games! We all have so much fun playing them and sometimes we play them during maths which always puts everyone in a good mood.

PROJECTS!!!

We have done a couple of projects this year we have been doing them on iPads and on paper. One of the projects was about space each of us chose a planet and made a project based on it at home. Some of the projects we did on the iPads are: the EU, young people changing the world, fast fashion and time zones! Once we finished the projects we presented them.

Digital Learning in 5th Class

We have been taking part in the Microsoft Dream Space Ambassador programme this year and the children have been learning how to code using Micro:bit. They are becoming experts at creating code using sequences, loops, variables and conditional statements, as well as finding and fixing bugs in their code.

The children have also enjoyed using our new school iPads to engage with the Music curriculum. They have been using the GarageBand app to compose music in a variety of different genres and have created some really outstanding compositions!

We have been using Minecraft Education this term, which the children have thoroughly enjoyed. The Dream Space Ambassadors took part in an Hour of Code with Minecraft activity. We are also starting to use Minecraft Education in our maths lessons, which has given the children opportunities to practice their maths skills in a fun and interactive way.

Trip to Iveagh Gardens

Lunch at Rose Garden

When we arrived, we went straight to the Rose Gardens to have lunch. There we chatted with friends while eating. The Rose Garden was beautiful, there was a huge metal structure around the garden. Inside of the structure there were patches of soil where there were roses being grown. We had wonderful lunch as the smell of roses wafted around us.

The Maze

After lunch we went to explore the park, there we found a maze, the maze was a giant circle made with hedges, in the middle there was a sun clock. From above it probably looked like a massive celt sign. Soon our friends found us, and we started playing ball tag. The aim of the game was not to get caught though we were running in a maze, the tagger had a ball to make it easier for them, you could either get caught by the ball or the person. The game was so fun that we probably spent an half an hour playing the game.

The Walk

Finally, the teachers told us that it was time to take a nice walk around the park. We took our belongings and started to head on the walk. In the meantime, we passed a huge waterfall, but it didn’t have any water falling at the moment, does it still count as a waterfall? Then we walked past two headless statues, kind of creepy. After that we walked some more and saw a woman having a photo shoot, I hope we didn’t interfere. And finally, we came to a log garden and took some photos.

After a lovely day we came back to school and chilled.

Peace Proms

The children from 4th and 5th Class represented our school at the Peace Proms in the RDS on Sunday 2nd February. The children were part of a large choir, joining schools from around Dublin to perform with the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland.

The children performed songs across a range of musical genres; pop, dance, music from musicals and some 80s and 90s throwbacks! They choreographed their own dance moves for some of the songs and had great fun singing and dancing.

It was a fantastic event and we are so proud of the children for their wonderful performances!

Eco-House Project in 5th Class

The children in 5th Class have been working hard on a Design and Make project for the last few weeks.

After learning about the eco-village in Cloughjordan, the children drew up plans to build their own eco-houses. Their houses included renewable energy sources such as solar panels, green spaces with plants, vegetable gardens and compost bins and rainwater collection systems to conserve water.

The children worked in small groups to build their houses using recyclable materials. They displayed wonderful teamwork throughout the project!

Here are their finished eco-houses!
