Autism Acceptance Month 2022

In April we celebrated Autism Acceptance month. It was a month where everyone in our school community came together. The parents hosted a coffee morning. The children and staff enjoyed lots of fun activities, celebrating how wonderful we all are together. We explored values like friendship, acceptance, inclusion and understanding. The children in our Autism classes and mainstream classes joined in classroom activities together. Check out how we got on in this short video:

Wellbeing Week 2022 in Harcourt Terrace E.T.N.S.

This week was Wellbeing Week in Harcourt Terrace E.T.N.S as part of  our Amber Flag application. We had a fantastic week with all members of our school community enjoying some wonderful, mindful activities. This was very much a child centred week, as the children created wellbeing choice boards, where they democratically selected the wellbeing activity they wished to do. Our wonderful staff went on a 5km walk and stopped off at our schools permanent location, which left everyone excited about our bright future. The children all took part in our couch to 5km challenge, travelling 1km a day. We had a virtual fundraiser in aid of Pieta house. Thank you to everyone who donated as it is very much appreciated. We are well on our way to become ambassadors for wellbeing, by obtaining an Amber Flag for our school. Check out how we got on in this short video:

LGBT+ Awareness week & World Children’s day in HTETNS

All of our children learned about different types of Families this week through stories. We identified how families can look different but have the same core values such as love, respect and care.

All of our classes responded to stories about families through artwork and discussion.

The children in 2nd class drew a family self-portrait. They also represented the love we have for our families by creating a collaborative class art piece.

We also celebrated World Children’s day in Harcourt Terrace E.T.N.S too. We asked all of our children to “Reimagine a better world”. The children came up with some lovely ideas. Check out how we got on below!

Science week 2021 in Harcourt Terrace E.T.N.S.

This week in Harcourt Terrace all the classes celebrated Science week. The children all became scientists in their classrooms. Let’s see how they all got on!

Science Week in Second Class:

Second class learned all about Energy this week. They learned about different types of energy such as solar energy, wind energy and electricity. We begin to understand how everything around us is made of atoms – both positive and negatively charged. Sometimes with a bit of friction these atoms can become charged! This is called Static Electricity.

We completed an experiment on the power of Static Electricity. We investigated weather a balloon charged with static electricity could attract different materials. Our two items for our experiment were salt and rice krispies.

First, we made a prediction on what we thought would happen. We completed the experiment and recorded our results with diagrams just like real Scientists do!

First class:

First Class really enjoyed Science week. We did lots of experiments.

We used food colouring to show how plants absorb water up their stem. We checked our heart rate after resting and after moving to see how much it changes. We made paper helicopters and got them to fly and spin!

Finally, we worked in teams to build ramps that our toy cars can speed down. We figured out ways to make our cars go fast and slow on the ramp, and even tried to build a really long ramp in our classroom! Here are a few pictures of our ramps.

Junior and Senior Infants:

Junior and Senior Infants were busy building rockets, making snowman coats and having a Science show and tell.

Tony & Ronnie’s class:

Tony and Ronnie’s classes made Volcano’s erupt, experimented with magnets and Checked what floats and what sinks. They also made a bottle of coke explode with some Mentos!

Happy Diwali from everyone in Harcourt Terrace E.T.N.S.

Everyone in Harcourt Terrace E.T.N.S learned about and celebrated Diwali with all of our friends. Have a look and see how everyone got on below:

In Second class the children spent the week learning about Diwali. They read the story of Rama and Sita and learned about Diyas. During Diwali homes are decorated with Diyas and the candle light symbolises goodness and light winning over darkness.  We drew and decorated our own Diyas.

The next day we learned all about Rangoli Art and how during Diwali families decorate outside their home with coloured sand in beautiful patterns. We used dyed rice to create our own Rangoli Art on our classroom tables. We absolutely loved this and had so much fun!

In Siobhán, Tony, Ronnie and Jennifer’s classes the children had fun hearing the Diwali story, watching some lovely candle lights and creating some nice Artwork.

We would like to wish everyone a very happy Diwali and we hope that everyone enjoys the celebrations.

Have a spooktacular Halloween everyone!

Today we had a very special Halloween assembly where everyone came together to sing, dance and chant. Some very lucky pupils picked up a Principal’s Award for lining up really well in the morning before school. There were some fantastic costumes on show in the school today. Thank you to everyone who put so much time into making today so enjoyable for the children. At the end of assembly had a Halloween march around our yard to show off all the wonderful costumes. Check out the photos/videos to see all the fun we had.

Have a lovely Mid-term break everyone and see you all again soon,

The Harcourt Terrace E.T.N.S team.
